Since Autumn 2025, the UK government implemented new identity verification requirements for company directors and People with Significant Control (PSCs). These measures aim to enhance corporate transparency and reduce the risk of fraud.

Key Changes

  • All new and existing directors and PSCs are now required to verify their identity before appointment or continuing in their role.
  • Verification is carried out securely online via GOV.UK https://www.gov.uk/ or through an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP).

ACSPs are typically professional advisers such as accountancy firms or solicitors. While Companies House does not provide a public list, many existing advisers offer this service.

Purpose of Verification

The primary goals of these new rules are to:

  • Confirm that individuals listed as directors are genuine and accountable
  • Improve trust and confidence in the UK business environment
  • Deter unlawful or fraudulent activities through stricter corporate governance

From 18 November 2025, identity verification became a legal requirement. However this date was not a deadline. It marked the start of a 12-month transition period, giving every company time to make sure all directors and people with significant control (PSCs) have verified their identity by their due dates.

Consequences of Non-Compliance

Failure to verify identity may result in:

  • Individuals being barred from acting as directors
  • Public registers highlighting unverified persons
  • Companies being required to declare director verification status in annual filings
