Chair & Chief Officer (CEO) Relationship
As chair your role will include numerous overarching responsibilities and duties. Part of your responsibilities will be to supervise and support the CEO/Manager. This unique relationship will be fundamental to the success of the organisation, allowing the chair the opportunity to gain an understanding of both the operational and strategic functions of the wider organisation. In addition, the role of a CEO/Manager can be isolated and often the chair will become the main advisor or mentor.
How does a chair support the CEO/Manager?
An effective chair will empower and encourage the CEO/Manager to regularly discuss strategic vision as well as sharing any difficulties or issues that the organisation is facing, at times acting as a sounding board. The chairperson may become a “critical friend” offering leadership advice and guidance, whilst encouraging and mentoring the CEO/Manager. See links at the bottom of the page for good downloadable tips and hints resources sheets.
Representation
The CEO/Manager and chair are the figure heads and will be asked to represent the organisation at various events. By understanding the organisation's vision and values the chair will be able to share this responsibility.
Recruitment
The chair will be involved with the recruitment/replacement process of the CEO/Manager. Their role will be to lead, shortlist and interview candidates where appropriate. The chairperson may also be asked by the CEO/Manager to be involved in the recruitment process of other trustees or office bearers.
The chair and other board members will also be involved in succession planning prior to a CEO/Manager standing down. The plans will include elements such as risk, recruitment, finance and the effect on the wider organisation.
